Avila, the walled town

I'm really enjoying this trip across central Spain, the roads are excellent, super smooth and almost empty compared to UK roads.

The scenery is also great, but there are lots of miles of not a lot except farm land.
It's a great drive in the wonderful bright sunshine.

We left Huerta this morning and headed for Avila who's main attraction are the town walls called Muralla de Avila.

They were built between the 11th and 14th centuries for defensive purposes and are exceptionally well preserved.

They are the most complete town walls in Spain and we're declared a UNESCO world heritage site in 1985.

Within the walls the town has a lot of cultural history and buildings but also a lot of very ordinary plain looking houses, and probably flats mostly.

It's an interesting place to visit but the walls are by far it's most appealing feature and why most people come here.

I walked up to a view point nearby called Cuatro Postes (Four Post) which at sunset promises fantastic views of the walls with the sun's last rays of the day lighting them up.
