Lovere Lake Iseo to Bellagio Lake Como

Sunday 30th June

I`ve added some photos from yesterday and Friday now I have better internet connection.

We had a peaceful night in Lovere, on the banks of lake Iseo and set off early for the iconic lakeside Italian town of Bellagio.

This prettiest of towns sits at the point in a triangle of land that occupies a dominant position on lake Como, with views down each of the three sections of the lake.

The drive here was, well, interesting, certainly not for the feint hearted.
We drove north up the eastern coast of this triangle. The road twists and turns as it clings to a little bit of cliff before the land plunges into the lake.
In parts it was ok, but other bits not so good, especially meeting oncoming cars and vans.

Some very wide Ferrari's didn't help much either.

It then occurred to me that there were no other motorhomes on the road. Humm, usually everywhere we go we have German motorhomes to accompany us.
Do they know something I don't ?

I was reassured when we met a bus, well if they can make, so we can, so I carried on with renewed enthusiasm.
Thoughts then turned to parking, Google maps shows plenty of carparks, but would they be suitable ?

In the end everything turned out ok, we got to town, avoided getting stuck in any narrow lanes, found a P&D carpark not too far from town and had a lovely afternoon wandering the cobbled streets of Ballagio.
It's a very hilly town but fortunately they run a tourist train, so for 5 euro you can hop on and see the town in comfort and save your feet.

It is very picturesque on the waterfront.

There are lots of busy restaurants serving lunch, some of them look very pricey but we chose a modest priced one for some lunch and a much needed cold drink, followed by the biggest and tastiest gelato I think I`ve ever had.
Mine was hazelnut with lots of whole nuts in, delicious.

There are lot`s of Italians here too, parading in their Sunday best as only Italians can.

There is a maze of narrow cobbled pathways up and down the steps throughout the town.
Interesting to wander, but rather tiring.
Some expensive boutiques for the well healed tourists, of which there are plenty here.

Eventually we headed back to Ed who was roasting away in the sun.

In view of our adventure getting here, I decided upon an alternative routes out of Bellagio, rather than the coast road we headed inland up into the mountains to a free overnight motorhome parking area high in the mountains above Bellagio.
We've not had a freebie night for ages so that'll be nice.

When we arrived it was full of cyclists, bikers and tourists as it seems to be a bit of a destination in its self for its magnificent views over Como and the surrounding mountains.

It's called Piazza Ghisallo Magreglio. (GPS 45.92373  9.26723)
There's quite a bit here, a chapel, visitor centre, shop, restaurant, market stalls, cafe and some statues in honour of who, I've no idea, but one is of some cyclists. (See below after some research)

The chapel is Santuario Madonna Del Ghisallo, Madonna is the Patron Saint of cyclists apparently.
What's more there is a museum of cycling here, I immediately thought of Jack Allen, Hi Jack ! he would be in his element here with everything dedicated to cycling, wish you were here Jack ! I know he reads this so I'm sure he'll email me to let me know how much he'd have liked it here.
I had a quick look in the museum, but not being a finely tuned lycra clad endurance cyclist like Jack, it was a bit above my level of plodder peddling that I do.

I'll go back later when all the tourists have gone home and we`re left with the splendid views to admire for the evening and I'll get some (more) photographs.

So a great day in a lovely town with a fascinating history and culture, a nice lunch and a nice cold beer on the fridge for tonight.
And tomorrow to plan for ...........................................

Tarbole Lake Garda to Lovere Lake Iseo

Saturday 29th June

We said a sad farewell to Torbole and Lake Garda this morning and set off on the scenic route to a town called Lovere on Lake Iseo.

It's one of the Italian lake less famous waterways but still has a lot to offer in terms of scenic wow factor.

We`re located at the top end of the lake on the town motorhome parking area, just adjacent to the lake.
This afternoon we walked down to the lakeside where there is a sailing club and sat watching the swans on the lake.

The drive here was quite impressive with a mixture of mountains, lakes and villages.
Were here for just one night before we move on.

I had no internet last night for some reason I not sure of. My mifi wasn't getting a signal so I was relying on the camp WiFi which was fine until last night, then nothing.
The tonight, again the mifi can't find a signal so I don't know what's going on.

Edit : The data had run out on the mifi, so I put the replacement sim in and Bingo, working again !

Lake Garda – day three

Friday 28th June

We've loved our time spent in Torbole on lake Garda, it really is a beautiful place.

I also think I prefer the north of the lake where we are, to the very commercialised south we visited last year.

There's a very relaxed atmosphere here with lots of surfer dude types, lots of very expensive looking mountain bikes and more windsurfers that you can shake a stick at !
Doing a bit of research, there are lots of walking and biking routes in the hills surrounding Torbole, but it's been much too hot to make that effort I'm afraid.
Our visit has been about r and r.
There is a water taxi goes from Torbole to Riva del Garda and other towns down the lake. We thought we might like to take a trip on that but it`s just felt like too much effort, so we`ve not budged from the beach !

It's been hot, at 2.30 pm, my phone is telling me it's 38c which is apparently cooler than yesterday !
But it doesn't feel that hot.
When we were in Belluno it was 32c and that felt hotter.
So it must be the fresher mountain air making it more comfortable.
Today there has been a really strong wind blowing and the windsurfers have been making the most of it.
And we have enjoyed it too.
Us kayakers have been getting blown along as well, usually in the wrong direction though !

I found out a little information about the cute little house on the harbour, it`s called Casa del Dazio, it dates form the Austrian / Hungarian Hasburg Empire and was originally a Customs House.
It seems it does open to tourists at times but always closed when we`ve been around.
It`s been restored and is kept with flowers in the window boxes throughout the year.

Sadly, I think this will be our last night in Torbole, tomorrow we'll move on, a little further west and a little further north.

In other words, a bit nearer home :((

No photos today, internet to sooo slow !

Campsite shops are a bit of a mystery, usually expensive, I was shocked yesterday to be charged 0.60 cent euro for two fresh bread rolls for lunch.
Upon exploring the alcohol department, I found these beauties, Italian Birra Dana, 66cl 4.7 vol at 1.35 euro per bottle. Bargain !
They taste good too, so I went back for a supply.
Who says Italy is expensive ? Well I have but it goes to show there are bargains to be had !

Lake Garda - day two

Thursday 27th June

It's still very warm here but we like it here.

Last night was a bit less humid than the previous night and a morning swim on lake Garda was certainly very refreshing.

There is something odd about the climate here and I do wonder though if they have an air quality problem here.
If you look south down the lake, you can see for a mile, maybe two miles, then everything disappears in a haze. This is on a bright cloudless day.
Even the small mountains around us disappear in a haze at times.
So what's causing the haze I've no idea.
You will probably see the haze on the photos.

Were still enjoying it though, it's warm and sunny with a cooling breeze.
After swimming, I got the kayak inflated and had a paddle, taking care to avoid the windsurfers, of which there are many and they go so fast.

So life is good on Lake Garda.

We had a short stroll into town this evening and full of appealing restaurants and tourist type shops of all description.
A nice place though.
There is a very cute, old looking house on the quay, I don't know if it was the old harbour masters house.
