Then came the sun

Photos from yesterday added now .....

We had a very peaceful night in Rain, at the campsite with it`s own lake.

The sun was shining when we got up and and it`s been a beautiful day.
We started off at the next town on the route called Donauworth, which to be honest was a little like Rain, a bit of a “filler” on the Romantic Route.  A very pleasant town, nicely painted buildings, a nice fountain, no litter anywhere but after that nothing particularly special. So we saw what was to be seen and headed of up the route to Harburg Castle.
There was a bit more history here with a substantial fortress on the hill overlooking the medieval town and the River Wornitz.
The castle dates from the 11th or 12th Century and is perfectly preserved in it`s original form which is quite rare.

Next stop was Nordlingen, which has a very interesting history. The town sits in the crater of a meteor strike 15 million years ago. The old town is almost perfectly round and there are complete town walls that were built on the 2.7 km circumference of the crater. These can be walked around under cover as there is a roof over the full length. I`d planned to walk it today but it was too hot for Louis so we just walked around the town and took in the views there.
Today it is one of only three towns in Germany that still has a completely established city wall, the other two being Rothenburg ob der Tauber and Dinkelsbühl. Both of which we plan to visit.
St George`s Church in the centre of town is constructed from quarried stone which was changed in it`s form as a result of the meteor strike.

We are parked up on the Stellplatz (GPS 48.85525 10.48345) just a stones throw from the town walls. It is very full with mostly German motorhomes but we happened to park next to another couple who use MotorhomeFun, Gordon and Linda, so we chatted to them for quite a while today. They made a big fuss of Louis with biscuit treats even though they don`t have a dog of their own.

Tomorrow we`re heading for Dinkelsbühl, it`s not the next town up on the route list but I think that one will turn out to be another filler so were giving it a miss and heading straight for Dinkelsbühl which is a worthwhile stop according to reviews.

First tomorrow though is a walk in the cool of the morning along the circumference of the crater, on the town walls.
