It was warm when we awoke today and with a clear blue
sky, the day just got hotter and hotter. So much so that a severe weather
warning has been issued for tomorrow due to high temperatures, only 30c though,
so not exactly life threatening to most.
The bus into the city was straight forward, the stop
is outside the gate to the Stellplatz and the No. 21 came after just a few
minutes wait.
We got off at Mirabell Palace
and crossed the River Salzach by the foot bridge with all the padlocks on with
messages of love.
The old town is indeed very impressive with it`s
buildings and monuments. We first walked down Getreidgasse famed for it`s
decorative hanging signs above each shop, even Mcdonalds has one !
There are some very high end shops here so we didn`t
hang around. It also has the house Mozart was born in which was creating some
keen interest from the Americans
Some of the shops were selling traditional Austrian costumes at very inflated prices and the Japanese were getting all giddy over those.
Then it was around to the Cathedral but seating was
being installed in front of it so it made photos difficult. At Residenz it was
a similar storey, the builders were replacing the paving. The fountain here
made an appearance in The Sound of Music, It is where they sang “I have
confidence in me”. Maria enters through Domplatz arches and splashes in the
huge fountain, so the internet tells me, I can`t remember it though.
We didn`t do the whole Sound of Music thing, partly
because we wern`t that bothered about it and partly because some of the sites
are slightly out of town, so more walking, which was not welcome in some
quarters.
I would quite like to have gone to Leopoldskron Palace
which was used as the family home and looks a very impressive place, but I
wasn`t that bothered.
Mozart Platz was very impressive with a fine statue
to the great man.
It is a very interesting city with lots to see and
do, we didn`t go up to the Festung Hohensalzburg Fortress, as they didn`t allow
dogs inside and you had to pay the 15 euro to go up whether you went in or not.
We enjoyed what we did and saw and it was getting
very packed with tourists parties when we left, all trailing behind a guide at
the front with a flag on a stick !
We made our retreat back across the footbridge and
had some lunch in the new town before catching the bus back.
We couldn`t resist going back through Mirabell Palace Gardens and taking more photos.
So a very enjoyable day in a very beautiful city,
definitely a city everyone should visit, so if anyone gets the opportunity,
you`ll not regret it.
