The Vršič Pass and Soča
Valley photos from
yesterday are added now.
Today we left Slovenia, sad to say farewell to
such a lovely country and friendly people. We have enjoyed our stay immensely
and have been very impressed with the beauty of the countryside, particularly
the Soča Valley and the fantastic aquamarine
river.
We headed for Gemona in the Friuli region of northern
Italy.
Gemona is a medieval hilltop village that was destroyed in 1976 during an
earthquake. It has been mostly rebuilt but the castle is still under
re-construction.
It was not as interesting as I`d hoped for so we had
some lunch and carried on towards Austria. The route was quite
mountainous with some considerable climbes and decents, but none so steep as
yesterday on the Vršič Pass.
The border control into Austria was un-manned, we had our
passports ready but nobody was there to ask for them.
We continued to a little village in the Austrian Alps called Oberdrauburg.
The campsite is immaculate, perfectly designed and
maintained. The shower block is likewise with excellent hot showers you could
eat off the floor.
I had a walk into the village this evening and it`s a
very pleasant little village indeed. A few shops and bars with locals enjoying
evening drinks in the warm June sunshine.
Tomorrow we are heading for the Grossglockner High Alpine Road which should be quite an experience.
