Grossglockner High Alpine Road and Zell am See

Well not everything in Austria is perfect then !

We set off today for the Grossglockner High AlpineRoad across the Alps.
The weather was bright and sunny with light cloud when we set off. By the time we had got to Kaiser-Franz Josefs Hone where the Pasterze Glacier is, it was starting to drizzle.
Out with the camera and a few photos were taken then back to Ed for tea and croissants.
Thereafter the cloud came down and we could see zilch. So what is billed as the most scenic route in Europe was all behind cloud and we saw very little of it.

I suspect picking a good day to do the route is a bit of a lottery, and sadly today we lost all our chips.
Still we did see some scenery on the way up and if the dash cam footage is any good I`ll put some up.

After the Pass we continued up to Zell am See which is a glacial lake and town of the same name.
Down here the weather was a big improvement but it looked like they had a shower here earlier too.

We are parked up at SeeCamp (GPS47.33995 12.80938).
The camp is on the north shore of the lake and this afternoon we walked into the town of Zell am See and were quite impressed. It is a very smart town with everything spotlessly clean and pristine as you would expect. There are some very smart shops with some very pricey goods for sale.

There is an impressive stone church and tower (St Hippolyt) from the 11th Century and the town tower from before the year 1000.

It was a very enjoyable walk along the banks of the river with a path for pedestrians and a separate path for cyclists – Austria is so well organised. Anywhere else just one path would suffice.

If it`s a nice day tomorrow I may go for a cycle around the lake, otherwise we plan to head for Salzburg which is about an hour and a half away.
