Wolfgangsee Lake - Wow

It`s getting a familiar tale now but we were sorry to leave the beautiful small city of Salzburg with it`s unforgettable sights and sounds.

We had toyed with the idea of going east to Vienna but it`s about a five hour+ drive in the wrong direction from here using non motorways (as we don`t have the required electronic toll box which is quite expensive for 3.5+ ton motorhome). So we`re stuck on non motorway routes, fine for what I had planned as we see small towns and villages, but not so good for travelling long distances.
I also doubted if we had the stamina, especially Louis, in the heat for a very large city, he struggled a bit in the heat of Salzburg and when he`s had enough he just sits down ! usually on a cold stone floor in a shady spot, but sometimes in the middle of the road.

So I decided we`d give it a miss this time, but hopefully we`ll get there another time as it does look like the sort of city we`d like to visit.

I selected as a destination for today the Salzkammergut region, about thirty miles south east from Salzburg. It is a very popular area given it`s natural beauty of crystal clear blue glacial lakes set amongst a backdrop of hills and rocky peaks. The area I decided upon was the town of Abersee (almost Welsh) on Lake Wolfgangsee and we are parked up tonight on SeeCamping (GPS 47.7366 13.43249).
It was a great choice, even if I say so myself. To be honest I think you could select anywhere in Austria and not be disappointed, it seems like everywhere is picture postcard perfect.

The campsite is directly on the lake and there is a little ferry that goes across the lake to the town of St Wolfgang on the opposite shore which is a very pretty, typical Alpine village with a good selection of artisan type stylish shops, bars and cafés. Attractive Alpine buildings and a medieval church sat looking directly over the lake for the benefit of lucky worshipers !
We had a wander around but then thunder clouds began closing in and with an uncertain route back, we decided we`d better head home. Would the ferry still run if there was a storm ? we just didn`t know, plus we`d left the roof vents open on Ed and an alternative route back would mean quite a long road journey by bus or taxi.
We managed to get back without a drenching, but it did rain later around tea time and Louis did his now usual barking at the thunder, much to our annoyance !

Curry and rice was on the menu for tea and was very tasty.
Thankfully the storm has passed and we are hopeful for a peaceful night.

The plan from here is to have a gentle meander back through the Bavaria region of Germany and my research tells me we are in for a real treat.

Much route planning for this evening I think.

St Wolfgang Town

St Wolfgang Town, that globe is solid stone about 1 metre in diameter and sits floating on a water feature so it`s direction of rotation can be changed by pushing with a finger even though it must weigh several tons. Fascinated me anyway.
