Island of Krk – Day 4 Krk Town and Stara Baška

Today we said goodbye to Camping Slamni in Klimno and headed south to see what else the island of Krk could offer. We had enjoyed our lazy days there but felt it would be good to see what else there is on the island.
So the sat nav was set to Krk Town on the west coast of the island.

For some reason I hadn`t expected much from the town, I`m not sure why, maybe because when reading about Krk nothing much seemed to be written about the town.
We were pleasantly surprised, it has an attractive and busy harbour and marina where we parked for the princely sum of 83 pence, with lots of boats offering excursions.
The old town is very quaint with narrow cobbled streets and alley ways full of bars, restaurants and shops but all done in a very stylish way. The residents and business owners all seem to make a lot of effort to make the place look attractive for visitors with flowers and it really makes a difference.
The is a Frankopan Castle providing the fortifications for the town. Frankopan were an old Croat family, natives of the island of Krk and ruled here from 1118 to 1480 when it fell to the Venetians.
There is a Cathedral and adjoining Monastry with lots of Monks walking around looking very busy, going about their business.

So we thoroughly enjoyed our time in the old town and of course enjoyed our morning Cafe Latte in a pavement café.

We then headed to the campsite I had selected called Skrila at Stara Baska, (GPS 44.9667 14.6741)
The landscape at this end of the island is very different to the north. It`s very much more arid and dry with far less lush green vegetation.
Having said that though, it turned rather cloudy this afternoon and there have been spots of rain on and off with more of a thunderstorm this evening. Not a lot of rain but quite windy and a few rumbles. I think the worst of it has bypassed us for now.

The campsite is much larger than Slamni but it is beautifully appointed and has a nice dog friendly beach were I took a swim this afternoon. Louis didn`t join me, I think he was too tired from his walk around the town this morning.

We`re hoping the sun will shine tomorrow, the forecast is good, so we`ll be lazing about again.
I will try and find a footpath tomorrow to walk up the hills behind the campsite as it looks quite interesting up there.
