Our sleep in Nordlingen was disturbed at 1200
midnight by fireworks from a wedding reception being held nearby, but we could
forgive them that. otherwise it was peaceful night.
It was up early for me to do the walk around the town
walls that it was too hot for Louis to do yesterday.
It was lovely walking in the sunshine, just two minutes from Ed, to be at the centre of things and where I wanted to be, what price that convenience ? 3 euro, plus 2 for electric at the Stellplatz. This is a great way to see a country.
It`s about 2.7 km around the walls, but it gives a fascinating
perspective on the town, it`s position in the meteor creater and an elevated
view of the roof tops of the various buildings.
I also spotted Storks nesting on one of the roof
tops. At first I thought they were plastic, but no they were real with chicks
as well. I suspect the basket has been put there for them to nest in, but still a
pleasure to see them.
Later it was back to the Stellplatz to say goodbye to
Linda and Gordon, our neighbours last night. They are heading to the same town
as us today but whether we end up on the same Stellplatz I`m not sure. They
have a much longer van so need a bigger pitch than us.
Louis will be disappointed if we don`t see them
again, he likes their dog biscuits ! and even knows where the tin is now.
We set off for Dinkelsbühl,
it`s only a forty minute drive through the lovely rural countryside that
Germany has. Orchards, grapevines, wheat, barley and maize they seem to grow it all here.
Dinkelsbühl
is another one of the three walled towns Germany has and it is indeed a real
treasure. Beautiful buildings surrounded by the walls, sadly not walkable, and
lots of towers along the way. It is quite similar to Nordlingen in many ways
with the large church at the centre.
Very picturesque, a photo opportunity at every turn.
The odd thing though was the large church in the
centre of town, St Georges, (same name as Nordlingen) seemed to have had the
forecourt turned into a used car sales area, I kid you not ! All sorts of cars,
all with info labels, no prices but presumably for sale.
Every evening they have a walking tour of the town
from the church at 2100 led by The Night Watchman, so that should be interesting, lots of ghost stories I hope, a
full report will follow tomorrow.
First there are some photos of Nordlingen this
morning, then Dinkelsbühl this afternoon.
