Rothenburg ob der Tauber

Only a brief update for now, The Night Watchman walking tour started off well in Dinkelsbühl as expected…….

Looked to be going ok……….

Then The Night Watchman spoke……German, and the faces on about half of the assembled walkers fell to the floor. He only spoke German. No point in following him around all evening, so I got talking to a couple from New Zealand, who were cycling the Romantic Route on proper pedal bikes, no electric motors, and they were getting on for seventy !!!

I told them I admired their stamina in doing such a journey, but they just laughed and said it was how they enjoyed their travels.

Good on `em I say, I will think of them the next time I`m puffing my way around somewhere on my bike.

So on to today, Rothenburg ob der Tauber is a very beautiful town, probably the jewel in the Romantic Route and for a good reason.

A photo opportunity at every turn, and I made many turns and took lots of photos.

We are parked up on the Stellplatz and once again almost in the shadow of the town walls (GPS 49.37052 10.18322) It should be 12 euro for the night but a kind Italian man gave me a ticket he had paid for until tomorrow and would accept nothing for it, so a freebie tonight, just 1 euro for the electric probably.

There is a Ghost Storey Walk at 7pm (6pm UK time) so that`s why this is a brief update. I`m headed of back to the town in a few minutes.
I`m assured the guide speaks English, we`ll see.

Update

OK, the ghost walk was actually led by the town executioner and it was very good, he even spoke English.

Rather than ghosts, it was really more about life in the town in the middle ages, how he got into that occupation, how he lives and works and some details of the job he does. It was a very entertaining hour, coupled with a walk around the fascinating streets of the town.

I could try and ramble on describing this beautiful little town but I would just bore you to death and I`d run out of adjectives to describe it so I`ll just put up some of the photos and let you decide.
All I`ll say is if you ever get the opportunity to visit this Franconia Bavaria Region of Germany then grab it with both hands. It has been a revelation to me, the countryside is so beautiful, the people so friendly and the towns and villages very picturesque.

Eating out and drinking is reasonably priced and diesel at 1.28 euro a litre is cheaper that the UK. It was 1.22 a litre a little further south but has crept up around here.
In Italy it was usually around 1.55 a litre and nearer 2 euro at Autostrada filling stations !

One thing I do want to tell you about is this afternoon in the market square were a brass band playing. They are The Ambassadors of Music and their Choir. They are from Indiana in USA, although there seem to be other bands and choirs from other US cities, and they tour Europe in the Summer doing open air performances.
It was very enjoyable sitting in such beautiful surroundings listening to their music.
