Huelgoat and Le Faou

Sunday 22nd June 2025

We left our lovely campsite on Ile Grande this morning and headed south west across the fertile fields of Brittany.

Our lunch stop was a pretty little town called Huelgoat in the Parc Naturel d'Armorique.

Huelgoat Lake

A walk through the forest to a natural grotto was what caught my eye whilst researching the area and it looked like a great place for a couple of hours.

Indeed it was. I think the lake is a man made reservoir but it has the most fantastic geology - Boulders, big smooth rounded ones, some as big as a house !

As if I hadn't seen enough of boulders, lol.

The River d'Argent flows down the valley and has has forever inspired folk tales.
Rocks with strange shapes, standing stones and sites with mysterious names refer to King Arthur, the devil or the Virgin Mary.

The walk involved squeezing through the giant boulders, ducking down
and climbing over some.

So how did the rockets come about ?

According to legend, when Gargantua was passing through the region, he requested hospitality from the forest’s inhabitants.

Furious when all he received was a buckwheat gruel, he made his way to Léon. In revenge, he threw all the rocks he found on his way to the site of the current chaos.

A geological explanation claims that the rocks were formed in the depths of the earth from the fusion of liquid masses and then moved up through the earth’s crust. The rocks solidified when they cooled down and then split.

It was certainly a great walk in nature.

Next it was further through the national park to Le Faou on the river d'Faou estuary.

Le Faou village

We're on camping car aire and have a lovely view of the river and a nice village nearby which we explored this evening.

Le FaouI mentioned a few days ago about the bi-linguel road signs
in French and Breton
