Sunday 15th June 2025
We woke up to bright sunshine this morning and the first thing to do was opening my fathers day card and presents, thank you Lauren x
Next, after breakfast, I watched the marathon runners come past our park up in Lion Sur Mer.
There were a lot of them, but they don't seem to go in for the fancy dress costumes we see at UK events.
No nutters carrying fridges on their back either !
They had a clap off me and a woof off Louis though.
Next it was a short drive to the British D Day Memorial outside Arromarches.
It was only opened in 2021 and I remember one of the veterans being interviewed on BBC as he'd put a lot of effort into raising funds for the memorial and I thought then we really need to visit at some point.
The site sits looking out over the Normandy Gold Beach where British troops landed and so many paid the ultimate price.
The remains of the Mulberry Harbour structures still lie off shore as a reminder.
It's a very impressive memorial, beautifully designed and built in stone and immaculately maintained.
The names of fallen soldiers, rank and ages are carved into the stone columns.
Very moving indeed.
These carved tablets on the walk up to the memorial tell the story of the Liberation of France in 1944 |
Between the memorial and the beaches are the rows of silhouette soldiers standing with heads bowed among a field of wild flowers.
After lunch we moved on to the nearby village of Arromarches Les Bains where we'll spend the night.
We had a walk around this afternoon, it's only a small village and very much directed at the tourist market.
