Grignano Port

Monday 9th September 2024

It stayed dry overnight and we woke to blue skies over Soave, but it did get overcast again on my walk up to the walled village, so the photos aren't a big improvement on yesterday in the rain.

We then hit the motorway again to get us closer to Croatia and ended up in a proper gem of a place just outside Trieste in Italy.

It's a little marina town called Grignano, only a tiny place, but it has parking for Motorhomes just by the pretty Marina.

As well as the marina there's a bar and a restaurant and I thought that was about it.

But after tea a went walking up to the castle on the headland and what an amazing place it is.

It's called Castello di Miramare and was built in the 1850's by Austrian Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian and the grounds extend to 22 acres.

The gardens just go on and on and are all beautifully maintained.

Unfortunately the castle was just closing when I was there but the grounds were there to freely walk around.

In the UK there would be a £28 admission charge.

Apart from the grounds and gardens there were amazing views over the bay.

I'm so pleased I found this place, I nearly didn't as it started raining as I set off and thought about turning back but decided to carry on as it looked and was just a short shower.

I'll happily return here in the future if I'm ever back this way again.

The motorhome parking is good too, free of charge and overlooking the pretty Marina.

The carabinieri drive round every now and then and give a friendly wave.

What a place and what views

A Russian's floating gin palace in the bay, what an ugly lump of a tub,
it just needs a timed limpet mine attaching

and we were treated to a Grignano Marina sunset tonight
