Île de Ré Island and Saint Martins

Tuesday 29th August 2023

It was another cool morning when we woke up,
we're getting used to these chilly mornings now !

We set off on the direction of La Rochelle and went over the toll bridge (16 euro in summer, 8 euro out of season) to Île de Ré.

It is a very smart island, popular with Parisiens apparently, lots have holiday homes here.

Were staying on the towns motorhome aire in the picturesque town of Saint Martins which has a large port filled with yachts of various types, some gin palaces and some scruffy dingeys.

Lots of street art, with bear sculptures featuring strongly by a local artist.

Around the port are dozens of restaurants which were packed out with diners.

Behind the restaurants are the tourist shops and boutiques to tempt the style conscious Parisiens to part with their euros in the name of fashion.

It's all all very attractive, clean and pristine, but very very touristy.

It's also a cyclists dream with lots of cycle routes criss crossing the island, so that's my plan for this evening, explore the island on my bike.

I had thought about having a few nights here but unfortunately the weather outlook isn't great after today. It seems there is some Atlantic rain crossing the region.

Apparently there's 4 inches of snow in the French Alps today so we wont be heading in that direction.

Today has been mostly overcast with brief sunny spells, although early evening looks more sunny.

If the rain does arrive, we'll probably head off somewhere else to be decided upon, but inland looks drier.

For now some photos of Île de Ré, I had a cycle up the coast and it is a great place to cycle with miles of dedicated cycle tracks.

More harbour side restaurants than you can shake a stick at !

It looks like Saint Martins was a fortified town at one time,
these areas below the town walls look like they used to contain water for defences ?
