Exploring the WAW

 Saturday 11th September 2021

Our overnight parkup at Donaheys motorhome dealership in Letterkenny was functional if not particularly scenic. It's a great free service they provide though for motorhomers who can turn up here anytime and plug in to electric hook up and fill with fresh water. They only ask for a charity donation and I was happy to oblige.

Letterkenny also wins the award (so far) for the least appealing river for a dip.
I crossed it yesterday while walking to the vets. The River Swilly !
It looks truly awful, but I think the explanation is the runoff from peat bogs that make up the surround area which make it look so far from what you might have in mind when you think of an Irish river.

So we set off this morning to reconnect with the Wild Atlantic Way, but first we called at Glenveagh National Park and did a circular walk around part of the beautiful Lough Beagh.

We then made our way to Magheraroarty Beach where we had lunch. The beach is clearly popular with surfers and wind surfers as there were quite a few there waiting for the to tide to come in.

Next we headed further south to a place I'd found on searchforsites, a motorhoming app. It's called Cloughglass beach, and oh blimey, it's only the most gorgeous beach I've ever been on.
I was left speechless.

It's a small cove with soft golden sand but what makes it so special is it's enclosed by the most amazing rock formations I've ever seen on a beach. In fact the whole area has similar rock formations where the lanes wind themselves around the rocky outcrops and the cottages nestle in between with water channels and pools of various sizes which add to the picturesque scenery.
They're hard to describe, and if I tried, I'd just make a mess of doing it,
so I'll let the photos do the talking.

Also, the beach is deserted, just the odd person from time to time.
The only other neighbours are two horses and an undetermined number of goats in the field next to us that we have been sharing our carrots with.

We also have a fabulous parkup for the night, 80 yards from the beach overlooking the dunes.
This is why I wanted to come to Ireland and I think I may take some dragging away from this place !

The weather has been a mixed bag, showers and sunshine. Mostly sunshine at Cloughglass Beach.

Sorry the photo order is a bit "out"
