With the exceptionally warm, dry and sunny weather we've been experiencing this year, I thought where better to go than Bonnie wee Scotland ?
So we set off this morning, final destination as yet undecided.
The traffic wasn't too bad after getting past Thelwall Viaduct at Warrington.
I'm always reminded though how happy I am not to be pounding the tarmac up and down the M6 on a regular basis whilst working.
Retirement has many advantages and this is definitely one of them.
First stop was Teebay Services at Shap for a lunch stop.
It's always busy here but we avoided the shop thankfully.
Next it was onto tonights park up at Sweetheart Abbey in Dumfries and Galloway.
It's only ruins left now of the Abbey that used to be home to a Cistersian Monastery founded in 1273.
There is a nearby water mill in the village that we also took a walk to.
We've actually been here before, I think it was o the way back from Ireland in 2022, but we didn't stay overnight on that occassion.
It was actually September 2021 when we were last here
They had the builders scaffolding up at the Abbey then as they do now, and they don't seem to have done much work in the meantime. Still I suppose it's a costly restoration on a very limited budget stretched to the max.
I was correct, the builders have done nothing that can be detected as building restoration in four years lol.
It's a great place to spend the night though with views over the scenic countryside surrounding the small village and Abbey.
