A short August getaway

 Friday 8th August 2025

With a good weather forecast for the coming week I decided on a few days away in Ed after a difficult week which started with very sad funeral and some health issues.

But the first call today was taking Ed for his annual MOT.

It's always a bit nerve wracking on a 22 year old vehicle, but I'm pleased to say he flew through without any advisories and the most welcome PASS certificate keeps him on the road for another 12 months of motorhome adventures.

I was unsure where to head to, thinking the coasts in August may be crowded and best avoided perhaps ?

So I headed for the small town of Corwen on the banks of the river Dee.

There's a lovely free parkup right next to the river that I found when I was here in April.

I didn't leave home until about 1.30 and the traffic to get here was quite slow but no major hold-ups.

After a rest and a cuppa we went for a walk up to a local viewing area on the hill above the town.

The view point is called Pen-Y-Pigyn, built in 1863 to commemorate the wedding of the future King Edward Vll.

There are great views of Corwen from Pen-Y-Pigyn

It's quite a climb up to the viewing area through the woods which have a number of sculptures and artworks.

The climb is well worth the effort for the spectacular views across the town and along the river valley.

The view to the opposite hillside has Caer Drewyn at the summit, this is the site of an Iron Age hill fort dating from 800BC.

The Romans also had a fort here due to its commanding views.
